Art/Book Fair Coming In October

Fans of artist books, magazines, zines and experimental publishing will have the chance to browse publications by a plethora of local, national and international artists, designers, writers, publishers and institutions at the second annual Vancouver Art/Book Fair (VA/BF) this October 5 and 6 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

The fair, taking place in the Vancouver Art Gallery's Annex and free to the public, will feature three rooms of exhibitors, as well as programs, performances and installations by nearly one hundred local, national and international publishers of books, magazines, zines, printed ephemera and digital or other experimental forms of publication.

Highlights include presentations by Amber Dawn (Vancouver), OWT Collective (Manchester), la silueta ediciones (Bogota), The Art Book Review (Los Angeles), Swill Children (Brooklyn) and Publication Studio (Portland), as well as library installations by Vancouver-based Heidi Nagtegaal of The Hammock Residency.

Presented by Chinatown-based bookshop and alternative art space Project Space, the Fair seeks to fill a gap by presenting the only international art book fair in Canada and one of only three in North America (the other two taking place in New York and Los Angeles, both produced by New York–based Printed Matter).

The event also acknowledges the rich history of artist publishing in Vancouver and Canada, as well as the vibrant communities that are currently publishing in Vancouver and across the country.

VA/BF will also produce Artists’ Books Weekend, a parallel series of events hosted by a variety of publishers, artist-run centres and independent curators in spaces around Vancouver.

Project Space is a bookshop, publisher and alternative art space in Vancouver’s Chinatown, and host of the Vancouver Art/Book Fair. In addition to offering a selection of local and international art, design and literary books, magazines and zines, Project Space produces curatorial and publishing projects that explore various aspects of publication.
