VIEWPOINT: Maybe The Playhouse Theatre Company Folding Is A Good Thing

Like many people who live in Metro Vancouver, I have been a fan of the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company. I love theatre; ergo, I love all theatre companies. But I am glad that the Playhouse has folded. I just hope the money that once supported it is fairly invested elsewhere in the local theatre community.

I hugely admire Max Reimer and his board for the tireless and brave effort they put into making the best of an impossible situation. I fault the funders, not the company.

BC Touring Council Funding Cancelled / Your Support Needed

In early January the BC Touring Council received word from Canadian Heritage program staff that their multi-year funding application ($140,000) to the Canada Arts Presentation Fund was not approved. 

BCTC has received funding from Canadian Heritage since 1991 and there was nothing during the application process that indicated that this year would be any different.

The Dance Centre has announced that the recipient of the inaugural Lola Award is internationally-renowned BC choreographer Crystal Pite. The $10,000 award, established in memory of the much-loved choreographer Lola MacLaughlin, was presented at a performance of the LOLA Projects – a Victoria-based initiated also named in her honour – at Scotiabank Dance Centre on March 1, MacLaughlin’s birthday.

GRANTS & AWARDS: Applications Open For City of Vancouver Cultural Infrastructure Grants

Applications are now being accepted by the City of Vancouver for 2012 Cultural Infrastucture Grants, covering financial support for costs related to planning, feasibility assessments, acquisition, renovation and development of cultural spaces.

The deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 4.

Eligible organizations are encouraged to submit an application to the 2012 Cultural Infrastructure Grant Program. Planning, minor capital and major capital projects are eligible.
