Cultural Human Resources Council releases Report on the Effect of the Recession on Canada's Culture Sector

"The global recession is expected to reduce revenues for cultural enterprises by approximately $3.1 billion in 2009". This is one of the findings of "The Effect of the Global Economic Recession on Canada's Creative Economy in 2009", a report prepared by The Conference Board of Canada for the Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) that measures the impact of the current recession on the cultural sector.

A Call To Action

So the Standing Committee on Finance has recommended that all arts funding by the province be restored to the levels of 2008/09. Good. Now what? Rest assured that this is significant, but it is not over. Minister Krueger “gets it”, but is that enough? Nobody knows if Minister Coleman “gets it” since he refuses to meet with anyone. Funny, I thought that was his job. 

I thought the Premier “got it”, and I hope these funding cuts are recognized as the big mistake that they are and he proves me right.

Dance Centre’s Mirna Zagar Honoured by Governor General

Mirna Zagar, executive director of The Dance Centre, has been presented with a commemorative medallion by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, for her work in the furthering of cultural relations between Canada and Croatia. She was presented with the medallion in her hometown of Zagreb, Croatia during the Governor General’s state visit to the region.

Canadian Music Centre Names New BC Regional Director

The Canadian Music Centre has hired Robert Baker as the new Regional Director for the British Columbia Region. Robert will replace Colin Miles, who has served as the CMC’s B.C. Regional Director for the past 31 years, at the end of November 2009.
