DEADLINE THURSDAY 29th: Nominations Sought For City Arts Council

On Tuesday, February 28, 2012, Vancouver City Council voted to establish a new Arts and Culture Advisory Committee of up to 13 arts and cultural community representatives.  

The council members will be appointed to provide a new voice for Vancouver’s creative community and will advise Council and staff on all civic programs that relate to arts and culture, to identify issues, and support public outreach and awareness.

MusicFest Names New Program Director

MusicFest Vancouver has announced the appointment of Matthew Baird as the festival's program director. Mr. Baird brings to the position a wealth of experience in music programming, production and recording gleaned from his extensive thirty-year career with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

A trained musician, Mr. Baird's musical interests range from classical and jazz to world music and crossover projects, qualities that make him the ideal person to carry on and expand the work of George Laverock, the Festival's founding Program Director.

Alliance Responds to 2012 / 2013 Budget

"The BC government is making a long-term commitment to keep our province dead last in per-capita arts funding" said Alliance for Arts and Culture executive director Rob Gloor in response to today's budget announcement.

"BC trails every other province in per capita funding of the arts," said Mr. Gloor,  "and the current budget, which projects a multi-year freeze in arts funding,  is a promise to remain last in Canada."

Budget details reveal frozen funding for arts and culture over the next three years, in spite of overall budget increases.

Top Indian Screenwriter Takes Residency At SFU

One of India’s premier screenwriters, Anjum Rajabali, has begun a residency at Simon Fraser University’s Praxis Centre for Screenwriters through to February 23, 2012.

During that period, Rajabali will conduct a five-day intensive scriptwriting workshop on the state of Indian cinema and introduce his own film, Raajneeti.

Call For Nominations: Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award

The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) has announced a call for nominations for the 2012 Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 23, 2012.

This $5,000 Award was initiated in celebration of PACT’s 30th anniversary in 2006-2007 and named in honour of Mallory Gilbert, who was Tarragon Theatre’s General Manager for 34 years and one of the founders and past president of PACT. The annual Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award celebrates and recognizes outstanding leadership within the Canadian Theatre community.

CBC Offers Free Space!

If you are a Vancouver based, nonprofit organization with an arts and culture mandate, you are eligible to rent for FREE the CBC's community spaces: Studio 700 and the Outdoor Stage - located at 700 Hamilton Street in downtown Vancouver. Studio 700 is 2,700 sq. ft. with a 12' X 16' stage and suitable for rehearsals, performances, workshops and fundraisers; capacity is 150 people .

The Outdoor Stage can accommodate audiences up to 200 people.

Gaming Grant Applications Update

Community Gaming Grants officials have confirmed that the first phase of processing Special Intake grants is now completed.  Groups in the Restored Funding Category (which were automatically processed based on their existing 2011 applications) will have their grants deposited within the next week.  

Over 300 groups will receive $3.23 Million in this category.
