City of Nanaimo Seeks Next Poet Laureates

The City of Nanaimo is now seeking applications for its next Poet Laureate and for its first Youth Poet Laureate. Terms begin in January 2017.

The role of Nanaimo’s Poet Laureate is to raise the profile of the local literary arts by creating and presenting works that are relevant to the life and culture of the city.

The Poet Laureate receives a $1,300 honorarium and $200 of project funding each year. The term is for three years.

The Youth Poet Laureate (aged 13-21 years) will serve as a “young people’s poet” to raise awareness of poetry, the literary arts and the positive impact literature and poetry can have on community life.

Mentored by the Poet Laureate, the Youth Poet Laureate will present original work to Nanaimo City Council, the Youth Advisory Council, and the community through a variety of civic events.  In addition, they will organize community-based youth poetry projects.

The Youth Poet Laureate will serve a one year term and will receive a $400 honorarium and $100 of project funding.
