From a unique waterfront location in Vancouver,  we welcome visitors to explore  exhibitions and take part in programs about life on and around the Pacific Northwest and Arctic oceans. Our most popular exhibition is the RCMP Vessel St. Roch, a National Historic Site housed in an iconic mid-century modern A-frame shelter.

Job Description:

Creative Designer Vancouver Maritime Museum Society

203-Position: Creative Designer

Pay Grade: 24

Reports to: Director of Development

Nature and Scope of Work

Production of graphics, signage materials, and digital content (including video, photography, and audio recording). The Creative Designer assists in the operation, care and installation of AV for exhibitions, public programs and special events. They also work with museum staff in planning for exhibition graphics needs and requirements, scheduling and co-ordination of layout, production and installation of text and didactic labels and vinyl and other signage.

Responsibilities:

Illustrative Examples of Work

Produces graphic design and production for gallery exhibitions, special events and gallery signage. This work is based on research, materials, and information provided by the Curatorial, Programs, Marketing, or Development departments.

Creates design work for posters, signs, sponsorship packages, fundraising letters, postcards, brochures, and branded merchandise.

Clearly articulates different design approaches through a variety of media.

Attends exhibition/event production meetings; consults with curator/ artists, public programs, marketing and development staff to determine graphics requirements; and works with the Display Technician to develop installation plans, timeframes and signage requirements.

Prepares files for production.

Uses professional design software to produce graphics.

Leads the work of the Display Technician or others to produce and install graphics.

Works in collaboration with contractors to develop and install audiovisual components for exhibits.

Collaborates with the team to develop creative content ideas to promote marketing and fundraising initiatives.

Large format print management including maintaining supplies, print scheduling, print proofing and digital archives.

Participates in long range planning for the AV/Graphics work.

Photography of exhibit installation process and final exhibit.

Create infographics, banner images, creative for museum promotion on web pages.

Edits and updates website as required. Records and edits audio for audio tours.

Creates virtual tours and products for website.

Develops and executes strategies to increase brand awareness with the Marketing and Design Manager and Director of Development.

Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

Degree or certificate in graphic design, film, art & design, exhibit design, illustration, photography, marketing or other related field (or equivalent experience).

Proficient in design software especially Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, and Final Cut Pro).

Ability to film and edit videos for a variety of different media to a high standard.

Able to interpret and communicate ideas effectively through sketches, renderings, and various visual formats

Ability to design graphics for a wide variety of different media.

Demonstrable ability to update WordPress or other website.

Ability to take direction and work within a team.

Experience using Sketchup or similar exhibit design software an asset.

Understanding of working within an established brand an asset.

Experience designing and/or installing art or museum exhibits an asset.

Artifact handling experience an asset.
