Job Description:

Are you passionate about dance and eager to inspire the next generation of performers? Brentwood College School is seeking an engaging and experienced Dance Instructor to join our vibrant Arts Department. This position includes teaching a competitive Dance Company class as well as beginner, choreography, and musical theatre classes. Your role will be instrumental in fostering creativity, discipline, and a love for dance in students of varying skill levels.

Our ideal candidate has a strong background in dance education and performance, at least three years of relevant teaching experience, and a talent for mentoring students. You should be skilled in choreography, class instruction, and creating engaging learning environments. Your organizational skills, creativity, and ability to work collaboratively will contribute to a thriving arts community.

You will be working alongside colleagues who are dedicated to supporting a positive student learning experience, from classroom to studio to athletic venue to boarding house. Your Opportunity:
This posting includes 4 blocks in each of 3 terms plus directing and providing choreography for the Grade 8 musical in term 1. Arts classes are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. The position is .57 FTE and has the potential to expand classes to sports afternoons and/or summer musical theatre camps with additional compensation.

Your Qualifications and Experience:
• BC teaching certification or Letter of Permission to instruct dance classes
• Teaching Certificate with a Recognized Dance Society: RAD, AIDTA, BATD, CDTA, ISTD
• Experience as a dance educator (institutional, community-based, or private), and ideally, teaching dance in a high school environment
• Familiarity with Grade 9-12 BC Arts curriculum is an asset
• Strong choreography skills and experience leading competitive and recreational dance

• Criminal Record Check clearance is a condition of initial and ongoing employment
• Some travel is required to participate in competitions and festivals
• Part time compensation for a TRB Certified teacher is between $41,495 and $65,495 based on years of experience. (Noncertified instructors will receive a lower compensation amount as they require supervision while they apply for and await an Independent School Subject Restricted certificate.)

Responsibilities:

Major Responsibilities
• Encourage an appreciation for dance, whether as artist or audience
• Recognize student talents and encourage them to participate fully in the Dance Studio and stage environment
• Present progressively challenging material for students at different stages of their development
• Incorporate direct instruction, discussion and projects to engage students, keep classes focused, and infuse a lasting desire to learn and create
• Organize class time so that dance instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time
• Teach 4 blocks of dance, incorporating a wide variety of dance techniques and genres including, but not limited to, lyrical, jazz, contemporary, and modern
• Encourage excellence and rigour in all aspects of dance practice
• Establish and maintain standards of pupil behaviour to provide an orderly productive environment during classes, including studio etiquette and protocols
• Assess student progress, three times a year, and maintain marks and grading records
• Administer attendance in every class. Follow School policies and procedures for student conduct and discipline
• Participate occasionally in after class work to assist students who need extra help
• Communicate effectively with students, parents and colleagues

Qualifications:

EDUCATION:

• Teaching Certificate with a Recognized Dance Society: RAD, AIDTA, BATD, CDTA, ISTD
• Certified in the Province of British Columbia to teach in an independent high school
• Has completed a degree in Dance at a post-secondary learning institution
• At least 3 years relevant work experience

EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

• Experience as a dance educator (institutional, community-based or private), and ideally teaching dance in a high school environment
• Strong ability to lead, inspire, teach and manage groups of students
• Maintains a strong dedication and passion for dancing
• May be required to choreograph and direct dance performance
• Develops daily lesson plans that provide for differentiation and on-going assessment
• Creates a positive studio environment with supports engaged student learning
• Able to demonstrate basic to intermediate steps to students
• Explain and demonstrate techniques and methods of regulating movement of body to musical or rhythmic accompaniment
• Exemplifies healthy lifestyle techniques
• Good communication skills, verbal and written
• Understands, accepts and abides by School’s vision, mission and values
• Teach with passion that inspires students to exceed their own expectations
• Works collaboratively within a team environment
• Able to maintain regular attendance and is punctual
