Call for Artists Description:
MURAL CALL FOR ARTISTS:
Create a moveable mural to be located on the north facing wall of Langley City Hall in the civic plaza. The mural will reflect the theme of crime prevention “Citizens joining together to create a safe community”
SITE:
The installation site will be on the north facing wall of Langley City Hall Langley Youth and Family Services offices located at 5569 204th Street, Langley, BC. This location is adjacent to the newly developed, brightly coloured Civic Plaza. The installation site is City owned and managed by building maintenance in the Recreation, Culture and Community Services Department. The civic plaza is home to community events, movie nights and free family drop-ins. Future program development is being planned. The mural would be seen by drivers and pedestrians heading south along 204th Street and east on Fraser Highway, and customers parking in the north surface parking lot of City Hall.
PROJECT SUMMARY:
The Arts, Recreation, Culture and Heritage Committee in collaboration with the Crime Prevention Committee is looking for a 4’ x 8’ mural on plywood with the theme: “Citizens joining together to create a safe community”. The mural should be able to be moved. The artist fee is $3500 which includes supplies. Installation will be completed by city staff.
ELIGIBILITY/CONSIDERATION:
This public art commission is open to all artists and art groups with expertise in visual public-art mural projects capable of designing and fulfilling the stated needs for this call. The invitation is extended to all artists in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley area and there is no entry fee.
Artists are responsible for providing a mounting mechanism for city staff to complete the installation.
Plywood, paint and supplies up to $2500 are covered under this call as well as a $1000 artist fee. Artists are to carry their own liability insurance (minimum $2 million) holding Langley City harmless during the entire process.
All entrants must be at least 16 years of age and older.
PROJECT TIMELINE:
November 22, 2024 – Submit Acknowledgment Letter (at end of Call) by 4:00pm PST
January 10, 2025 – Artist Submission Deadline 4:00pm PST
January 28, 2025 – Review of submissions
February 28, 2025 – Artist notification
May 1, 2025 – Mural complete. And delivered to City
How to Apply:
HOW TO APPLY/REQUIREMENTS:
Each application must be submitted in either email or hard copy format.
ALL SUBMISSIONS MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:
a. Title Page with Artist Name, Address, Phone, Email reference Mural Call to Artist 2024-02
b. Maximum 1 page written description of proposed mural including:
• Whether or not the work will be a collaboration among two or more artists
c. Please submit digital images etc. – images, drawings, photos up to eight (8) high-res jpeg images (300 ppi digital images) to support the proposal. Rendering to scale.
d. Resume for each artist if there is collaboration. The resume of each artist must be included and an explanation as to the role or responsibilities of each.
e. Application must be submitted via email to: khilton@langleycity.ca. Hard copies can be delivered or mailed to: Director of Recreation, Culture and Community Services 20399 Douglas Crescent, Langley, BC V3A 4B3. Deadline for submission: January 10, 2025.
f. Please include photos of other installations you have created, or examples of your artwork to provide an idea of the style and type of work you have completed. Please submit digital images. Hard copy photos will also be accepted. You must identify the images by year created, location (if an installation), the medium and for whom the work was created if it was a commissioned piece.
g. Three references must be included that relate to works/installations previously completed. Be sure to include the person’s name and contact information and how that person is familiar with your installation – for instance did they coordinate the project? Did they commission the work on behalf of an agency or corporation?
Fees/Compensation:
Langley City proposes a budget not to exceed $3,500 (all inclusive) for the design and delivery of the mural to 5569 204th Street. This budget is to cover all expenses associated with, but not limited to, artist fees, the design, labor, material fees, tools, operations and meetings, and transportation. The artist is responsible for providing their own studio space to complete the mural. The artist will work with a designated city staff person during the installation process.
