2012 City of Vancouver Book Award Shortlist

Since 1989, the annual City of Vancouver Book Award has been recognizing authors of excellence of any genre who contribute to the appreciation and understanding of Vancouver's history, unique character, or the achievements of its residents.

The $2,000 prize is funded by the City's Publishing Reserve, which was established in 1977 as a permanent legacy for Vancouver writers and publishers.

The winner of the 2012 City of Vancouver Book Award will be announced at the Mayor's Arts Awards.

Volunteer Suspected of Stealing $12,000 from Vancouver Festivals

A volunteer is suspected of stealing more than $12,000 from two summer festivals.

The suspect, described as a heavy-set woman in her thirties with dark, wavy hair, volunteered during the Pride Parade and had access to the funds of the Vancouver Pride Society. Over $9,000 went missing on August 3, the day after the parade.

The same woman is believed to have volunteered for the Vancouver Taiwanese Festival on Sept. 3, when $3,000 went missing from a volunteer tent.

Finance Committee Announces Budget 2013 Consultation Process

VICTORIA - The all-party Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services announced on September 7 its plans for conducting provincewide budget consultations. The consultations will begin once the Budget 2013 Consultation Paper is released by the Ministry of Finance.

"The consultation process provides an important opportunity for British Columbians to provide input on next year's provincial budget," said Committee Chair Douglas Horne. "We invite any interested individuals and organizations to participate," added Committee Member Mable Elmore.

Call for Two No-Fee Presentations between November 1 and March 31

As part of the Statistical Insights on the Arts series, Kelly Hill will conduct four presentations in 2012-13 for no speaking / preparation fee. The speaking fee (covering preparation time) is funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council in conjunction with their funding of the Statistical Insights on the Arts series.
 
Presenting organizations must pay for Kelly’s travel and accommodation expenses related to attending the event.

Studio Space Rental Opportunity

Opening in October 2012, Emily Carr University of Art + Design will have a studio space available for rent monthly (and starting January 2012 available to rent by 3 month term). This studio space will be available for rent by the general public and artistic community in Vancouver. The space will be resourced with a variety of tools such as light tables, easels, photo documentation station and will be supported by technicians who will be available to help within the studio space.
